After repatriation, former prisoners of war (POWs) face numerous challenges, including accessing adequate medical care, receiving compensation, and reintegrating into society. These challenges primarily stem from gaps and uncertainties in the existing legal regulations. These individuals often endure physical and psychological traumas and injuries resulting from torture and ill-treatment during their captivity. The long-lasting effects of these experiences require prolonged and consistent treatment for recovery. Consequently, their quality of life is significantly diminished, and mortality rates are higher compared to the general population.

This report aims to shed light on the international legal frameworks that should guide the establishment of national regulations regarding former POWs and the application of laws to safeguard their rights.
